“It’s awesome to find a company as passionate about their product as we are about ours.”

WELCOME
SBP Australia is unique in the construction industry. Not for what we do — there are lots of builders who do similar work — but for the way that we deliver. We’re not a family business, but we feel like one. We’ve grown up from being one of the small fish in a big pond, and have built the business on strong family values like trust, respect, honesty, and hard work.
In what can sometimes be a cut-throat industry, we’re immensely proud of our collaborative approach. We work shoulder to shoulder with clients, subcontractors, and consultants. We consider them to be part of our extended business family and we support each other in achieving the best outcomes for everyone. When you work with SBP on your project, you can be sure that we’ve got your back.
Around 80% of our work is repeat business. Some of our clients are now third generation family businesses and we’ve worked with parents, children, and grandchildren. Our clients say they keep coming back to us because they can trust SBP to deliver exactly what they need. They tell us they like working with our people and they’re confident about the quality of what we deliver. What sets us apart is the way we work with our clients, rather than for them. We learn about their business and goals so that we can tailor the best solution for every project. Ultimately, we’re problem solvers. We’ve learned what brings success by pitching in and doing the work, not observing from the sidelines. SBP Australia has been around for more than 30 years now, and we’re still going strong. We have the responsiveness and agility of a small builder, with the experience and capability of the big guys. We’re a small builder doing big things.

SMALL BUILDER BIG OUTCOMES /
For more than 30 years SBP Australia has been creating tailored construction solutions that deliver quality, efficiency and resilience.
We’ve grown up from grass roots, with most of our key people starting their careers ‘on the tools’. We’ve learned as we’ve grown — from our successes and our mistakes — but we haven’t lost sight of where we started and the things that got us to where we are today. Things like listening carefully to our clients’ needs, having the courage to challenge them if we think there’s a better way, remaining open and transparent, and always being available when things don’t go to plan are the cornerstone of our success.
We look and feel a lot like a small builder. But we punch well above our weight. From cold rooms for retail outlets to the largest refrigerated storage facility in the Southern Hemisphere, SBP has the capability to tackle construction projects of any size. As a boutique builder, we’re small enough to be responsive to our clients’ needs.
“Brisbane Markets Limited has worked with SBP since 2002 when we took over the Markets from the State Government. However, they’ve been in the industry a long time, so they’ve got a good, proven track record”
– ANDREW YOUNG, CEO, BRISBANE MARKETS LIMITED
Free from layers of corporate overhead, we are lean and agile. Talk us through what you need, and we can have a design concept sketched for you by the end of the day. Don’t let our size fool you — we have the networks and capability to compete with much bigger builders.
Very few builders can provide the complete integrated solutions offered by SBP. Right from the early planning and design work, we can manage the entire construction process, saving time and money, and helping manage the risk of having multiple contractors on a job. We offer in-house design done by guys who have worked on site and understand all the moving parts of a building. We offer complete construction management, and can provide ongoing maintenance services after handover to ensure your facility continues to run optimally. We also have our own steel fabrication division, as well as custom racking solutions.

Our directors have decades of collective experience in building and construction. They have all worked in hands-on roles within the business. Now — with the benefit of the insight and wisdom they have gained — they drive our vision for the future.
MAX BURNS
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Our founding director has been in the industry for over 40 years. Starting his early days in construction as an apprentice, Max has worked with cold storage facilities since the mid 1970s. Over the years, he has gathered an enormous amount of knowledge and experience. Our clients know that Max knows his stuff. They trust his input to get the most out of their projects, and respect his no-nonsense approach. Max is a great mentor to our younger team members. He has an unflagging energy and commitment to go the extra mile for our clients, and a passion to continue to grow the company.
NEVILLE HOMBSCH
DIRECTOR
SBP stalwart Nev Hombsch knows the best way to construct a building. He is highly skilled at optimising construction methodologies to ensure the best value and most efficient process. He has an eye for seeing potential problems and rectifying them before they become an issue. Nev started out his career ‘on the tools’ and quickly came to love the challenge and scale of the commercial industrial space. Nev is a hands-on bloke who is not afraid to pitch in and get his hands dirty. He’s proud of what SBP has become and is excited to leave a great legacy for the young SBP leaders of tomorrow.
TONY AISTHORPE
DIRECTOR
Tony is all about the detail. Clients love to sit down with him to nut out a design because they know they’ll get a great result. He knows exactly the right questions to ask to form a comprehensive scope. When it comes to construction, Tony has an innate understanding of how to fill the gaps between idea and reality. Having grown up in and around building sites, construction has always been in Tony’s blood. He started hands-on as an apprentice, working in virtually every trade. He’s proud of the tight knit team that SBP has built over the years and is focussed on consolidating the company’s position in the market.
DAN MAHONY
DIRECTOR
Dan’s expertise in the insulated panel space is incomparable. From technical proficiency to understanding the ins and outs of the industry, he knows the whys and wherefores like the back of his hand. Clients are confident and comfortable dealing with Dan. They trust him and regularly call upon him for advice, knowing that he consistently delivers on their expectations. Down to earth and level-headed, Dan appreciates that even the simplest projects have their challenges — the trick is to be able to adapt to the circumstance at hand. Dan’s vision for SBP is to build a culture of empowerment and independence as the business continues to thrive.
OUR STRUCTURE /
Thirty years has seen us grow in size and capability, but we’ve deliberately retained a simple structure that avoids bureaucracy and complicated reporting lines
COLD CHAIN SOLUTIONS /
SBP Australia provides construction solutions to the food industry along the entire cold chain — from paddock to plate. We know the importance of maintaining the safety and quality of food products as they make their journey from primary producers to the meal tables of families across the country. With food moving in and out of refrigeration control an average of 14 times before it’s consumed, the effectiveness of the cold chain is imperative and relies on controlling temperature every step of the way. We work with suppliers right along the cold chain to help them maintain the integrity of food, and reduce waste.
INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS /
We’re not your typical builder. Our ability to deliver end-to-end tailored solutions sets us apart from many of our competitors. We’ll work with you from the earliest stages of concept, and manage the whole process. With one contractor managing construction from start to finish, you save time and money and minimise risk. Our design team is led by industry experts who have done their time on site and understand how a building works. Our maintenance services will make sure your facility continues to run as effectively and efficiently as it was originally designed to.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
From concept, through detailed design, to complete turnkey solutions, SBP Australia provides expert construction services across a range of sectors. While our offering is broad, we specialise in facilities for the food industry. For more than 30 years we have worked with businesses along the whole supply chain, from primary producers to retail distribution centres. We can build your completed design, or work with you from the conceptual stage to design and deliver a complete turnkey solution.
INSULATED PANEL
We’ve been building cold rooms and fresh food facilities since 1987. Decades of experience has taught us the necessity for primary produce to be appropriately chilled, ripened and stored. Having our own insulated panel division means we can customise storage solution to meet our clients individual needs. We design and construct all ancillary components for cold storage facilities including heavy duty wall protection, door opening protection, and a huge range of cold store facility doors.
SPECIALIST RACKING
We design and manufacture customised racking systems to suit your needs. Compliant with all food storage regulations and engineer certified, our racking is made from heavy duty steel which is hot dipped galvanised for added durability. We’ll tailor a racking solution for your facility to optimise space and provide safe storage for your produce.
STEEL FABRICATION
With our own structural steel division, we can be confident of the availability and quality of steel for our own construction requirements, as well as supplying other builders and contractors. We perform our own structural detailing, fabrication, and erection services, which means we are never at the mercy of other suppliers. We are pleased to offer these services to the entire construction industry.
MAINTENANCE
Keep your facility running smoothly and efficiently with SBP’s dedicated maintenance experts. We work across a range of industries, ensuring the sustained functioning of commercial operations. SBP Australia can take care of your routine maintenance work to keep things running smoothly. Need someone on call to sort it all out when things go pear-shaped? We are the preferred repairer for many site management companies.
EMERGENCY CALL-OUTS
It’s imperative that cold storage facilities are up and running 24×7. SBP Australia is a veteran of the food industry. We understand that your cold store must be operating at 100%.
We offer an emergency call out service that will fix the problem in the shortest possible time without costing the earth.
COLLABORATIVE EARLY INVOLVEMENT /
Collaborating with SBP early in the design process minimises cost, time and risk, and optimises design. We make it our business to get inside our clients heads and understand their needs and desired outcomes.
When we are involved in the front-end design, SBP can identify opportunities for innovation and cost savings — not just in capital expenditure, but operating costs for the whole life of the asset. We can significantly improve buildability and quickly identify and mitigate design issues before they are documented, avoiding the need to re-draft as a result of inappropriate design elements. Too often in traditional engagement models, designs are sent back for re-work post-tender for ‘value engineering’ or reverse engineering because they’re too costly and sometimes impractical to build. The later this occurs in the whole process, the more cost blowouts and delays are exacerbated. SBP’s collaborative early engagement model capture these issues early and designs them out.
“Managing big projects is always a challenge and holds a certain amount of risk. The guys from SBP Australia think ahead from very early in design to spot any potential problems before they become an issue. They are always available to answer questions and discuss issues throughout the whole process.”
– BRIAN SAHARIN, GENERAL MANAGER, QFS
SAFETY & QUALITY /
SAFETY
The wellbeing of everyone on and around our sites is paramount. Nothing is more important than the safety and health of our people. We believe that everyone has the right to return home safely from work every day. We make it everyone’s responsibility to ensure a safe work environment. Our ‘ThinkSafe’ philosophy underpins everything that we do. It is founded on the belief that all incidents are preventable and drives a culture of proactive incident prevention. We encourage individuals to take personal accountability responsibility for their own safety and that of their team members. People are empowered to speak up and act upon any safety concerns.
QUALITY
Quality is so much more than an end result. It’s a philosophy. A way of working. Everyone at SBP Australia takes personal responsibility for achieving quality outcomes. We are dedicated to always working with a quality mindset that:
- uses the discipline of ISO 9001 to develop and implement processes which lead to outcomes that satisfy our clients and deliver exceptional value
- takes an approach of continuous improvement
- fosters robust, long term relationships with clients, subcontractors and project partners
- documents and measures our quality targets and objectives.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE /
SBP Australia has more than 30 years of experience creating structures to support the fresh food industry from paddock to plate. We’re proud of the facilities we have worked on with primary producers, wholesalers, retailers and everyone in between. Our experience with warehousing and distribution centres has seen us work with some of the best known suppliers and distributers in Australia.
Our national footprint ensures we are well positioned to support cold chain logistics companies who operate the length and breadth of Australia. Our east coast hub supports responsive deployment of construction teams wherever they are needed – from regional producers to urban centres. We have worked on projects from Darwin to Tasmania, and Brisbane to Perth.
Our integrated whole-of-life solutions continue to deliver value to clients long past construction, throughout the lifecycle of building assets. With the strength of multiple specialist divisions, we have in-house experts who can consult on how to achieve the best outcome from a holistic perspective, ensuring our clients have the insulated panel and fabrication solutions integrated into the overall construction. Our maintenance division offers the ability to keep things running like new after handover, and often weigh in at the design phase to ensure maximum efficiency for ongoing operations.
BRISBANE MARKETS C1 WAREHOUSE
- COMPLETED 2019
- VALUE $12.8 M
- TOTAL FACILITY SIZE 5,300 M2
- TIMEFRAME 10 MONTHS
SBP Australia worked together with BML on the $17.5M state-of-the-art C1 refrigerated warehouse at Rocklea. Completed in April 2019, the facility was purpose built as the new national Operations Centre for end user, the Montague Group. We worked closely with BML and their tenant to understand operational dependencies, so that the day-to-day business could continue with little or no impact during construction. Through our early involvement in the design of the insulated panels component, and our understanding of the end user’s requirements, SBP Australia was able to offer BML a range of cost savings by providing alternative materials that did not impact the quality or functionality of the finished building. The 5,300m2 facility features six coldrooms, four fast drying/ coolrooms, a packaging area, two finger docks and dock levellers, offices, gymnasium, and a battery change room tailored for the electronic forklifts that will operate in the warehouse footprint. Close collaboration on design modifications with BML and the architect were key to this project.
